For your supplementary assessment, you are required to investigate the issues surrounding the
ethical handling of information on mobile phones.
You should focus on these two in your reflection (which you can write in essay form or with
subtitles):
1. Write a critique explaining how the common good is challenged or negated by this
issue locally and globally (approximately 400 words).
2. Propose two or three ways to address the challenge as an advocate in order to
achieve a more just society (approximately 800 words).
In your answer, you will need to demonstrate your understanding of the Common Good and its
relationship to other CST principles, such as Human Dignity.
NB: You are not required to make reference to all CST principles; 3-5 CST principles will be
sufficient.
Readings.
According to recent press reports, Apple has refused to release information stored on its iCloud
servers despite repeated requests from police, who seek information on suspected criminals
who refuse to reveal their pass codes to their iPhone; and in some cases, on members of known
criminal networks. The police believe that Apple has information that could help them
significantly in their investigations of criminal activity, including terrorism and child abuse.
They claim that Apple’s refusal to give them the requested information has not helped the
progress of their investigations at all – which are aimed at identifying, for example, the victims
who have been subjected to unlawful, and unethical, sexual “contact” and radicalisation.
The police argue that encrypted information should never be used to shield or provide safety
and security to violent or dangerous criminals. Companies like Apple, they believe, should feel
obliged to assist with police investigations of crimes especially concerning child-abuse and
terrorism, so that justice may be served to those who are guilty of these crimes.
